Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

Join us for a discussion with Dr. Ebtehal Abdulaziz Alkhateeb as she explores the situation of statelessness in Kuwait and the suffering of stateless women in Middle East’s patriarchal societies.

The word "Bedoon" is the Arabic phrase "bedoon jinsiyya," meaning either "without nationality" or "without citizenship.”  In Kuwait it is used to denote those individuals who are denied citizenship. As a consequence, they are often barred from employment, denied education, restricted in their movements and living under the constant threat of arbitrary arrest and deportation.

Speaker:
Dr. Ebtehal Abdulaziz Alkhateeb, Assistant Professor at Kuwait University, College of Art, Department of English Language and Literature

Moderator:
Thomas Dickens, Assistant Dean for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer at The Ohio State University Libraries

Introduction:
Magda El-Sherbini, MLS, Professor and the Middle East & Islamic Librarian at The Ohio State University Libraries

Sponsored by: The Ohio State University’s International and Area Studies Department, The Middle East Center at The Ohio State University, and Near Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures Department at The Ohio State University
