On 15 July 2016, Turkey witnessed a coup d'état attempt against state institutions, including, but not limited to the government. During the coup, more than 300 people were killed and many more were injured. Government buildings, including the Turkish Parliament and the Presidential Palace, were damaged. Thousands gathered to protest and resist against the coup attempt the same day, and the coup was eventually defeated by the citizens of Turkey. The government accused the coup leaders of being linked to the Gülen movement, a group led by Fethullah Gülen and designated as a terrorist organization by the Turkish government.
On September 28th, Ahmet Şık will be our guest in Columbus to deliver a talk about the failed coup attempt in Turkey as well as the organization of the Gülen Movement. Ahmet Şık is an investigative journalist and the author of several books, including “The Imam’s Army”, in which he investigates the Gulen Movement. His work led to his detention for more than a year in 2011-2012, while his book was banned and seized at the time. Ahmet Şık has been awarded UNESCO’s 2014 Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize for his “outstanding contribution to the defence of press freedom.”
There will be a Q&A session right after the talk and audience will be more than welcome to ask questions. The talk will be in Turkish with consecutive English translation.
