Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

Academic and Educational Programs

MESC organizes programs for each of its main constituencies: academia, K-12 education, and the general public. In the realm of academia, check out the MESC calendar for lecture series, symposia, and other activities targeting the Middle East studies academic community. MESC is also a partner with the Midwest Institute in Kalamazoo Michigan for community college faculty and provides funding and lectures for their summer institutes.  A Summer Institute on Middle Eastern Cultures sponsored by the Center is aimed at secondary school educators in the Midwest. Institute participants are required to produce lesson ideas, plans and units which follow state curriculum guidelines.  These are then made available on line for other teachers.

The Center's outreach programs are directed at local, state, regional, and national audiences. The Center's speakers bureau, composed of OSU Middle East experts, annually delivers over fifty public talks to various community groups primarily in Ohio and adjacent states. For P-12 teacher training activities, contact MESC directly to tell them about your classroom plans for one-on-one consultation, and to find out when the next teacher training institute, workshop, or lecture series is coming. The Center also works with the International Affairs Global School Bus program which provides classroom speakers for teachers.

Another important activity which extends our national impact is the Summer Institute in Persian and Turkish. Sponsored by the member institutions of the Eastern Consortium in Persian and Turkish (University of Chicago, Columbia, Georgetown, Harvard, Michigan, New York, Ohio State, Princeton and Pennsylvania) and in cooperation with OSU's College of Humanities, the Institute offers intensive language training in introductory and intermediate Persian and Turkish. See also a list of summer intensive language programs which MESC endorses.
