Online Options

There are many reasons why you might choose to study a language online; ease of access, ability to connect to native speakers and engaging content can all be a part of the learning experience.  Because we are all staying at home now to help combat Covid 19, there is all the more reason! Our  department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures offers Arabic tutoring online, in addition to language courses this summer, and there are now many more options nationwide and globally for summer programs. We also include resources for learning on your own below.

Summer Institute for Languages of the Muslim World (SILMW)

(SILMW) is an annual intensive language program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. They invite students to join the 9% of Americans who choose the unique and meaningful experience of learning a Less Commonly Taught Language (LCTL). Learning these languages will allow students to gain new global perspectives and set them apart as highly qualified individuals for international work and engagement.  Many of these languages can assist students in securing international positions in governmental, development, and academic sectors.    

This summer SILMW will take place from June 15 to August 8, 2020, and will be offering Arabic, Persian, Swahili, Turkish, and Wolof.  The program is 8 weeks and is divided into two, 4-week semesters. The institute will be offered in an online format, consisting of activities such as language practice, conversation tables, movie nights, and more!  Registration Deadline is May 15, 2020

When you complete the program, not only will you be able to hold a conversation in a new language and have earned up to 10 credits, you will have had fun!

Center for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies (CAMES)

At the American University of Beirut (AUB) is pleased to announce that they will be offering an intensive summer Arabic programs online between June 15 and July 31, 2020. CAMES offers two separate programs:

1.  A seven-week program in Arabic Language and Culture that is designed for students interested in developing overall proficiency in Arabic in both its Standard and Lebanese varieties. Emphasis is placed on the development of the various skills within a communicative, proficiency-based framework that perceives Arabic in all its varieties as “one language” and thus integrates standard Arabic and Lebanese colloquial within the same course, and that gives special attention to the development of intercultural competence in Arabic. The program provides instruction at different levels of proficiency and students receive 9 credit hours that can be transferred to their home institutions.

2.  A seven-week program in Lebanese Arabic (LA) Language and Culture that offers intensive instruction in LA at various levels. The program is designed for those learners who want to devote their attention to the development of proficiency in LA and thus places heavy emphasis on the speaking and listening skills and on building/enhancing intercultural competence in LA. The program offers students 9 credit hours that can be transferred to their home institutions.

Both programs provide intensive online instruction in the language and culture through a rigorous academic program that is complemented by an integrated series of films and guest lectures.

The application deadline for the online program is May 10, 2020.

Arab American Language Institute in Morocco (AALIM)

AALIM programs are typically held at the AALIM Language Institute for Language Studies in Meknes, Morocco.  Their statement of purpose is to help every student advance toward their personal language learning goals.  Students are able to take coursework in Modern Standard Arabic and the Moroccan dialect, Darija.  

AALIM is currently offering individual and group options for online language study.  Students should expect roughly thirty minutes of homework for every hour of class.  Each level of Modern Standard Arabic is covered in 80 hours of online instruction.  Students in all programs are able to schedule up to two hours per week of Arabic conversation practice with a Moroccan language partner at no additional charge.  

Individual Classes: Courses are offered either on an hourly basis or as 30-hour packages scheduled based on student availability.  AALIM individual programs include: Modern Standard Arabic, Moroccan Colloquial Arabic, Media Arabic, Arabic Poetry, Arabic Literature, etc.

Group Classes: Three consecutive four-week summer terms are offered for group classes.  Classes are held Monday through Friday for two hours each day.  Two sections are available for registration to accommodate different time zones.

Noor Majan Arabic Institute 

The Noor Majan Arabic Institute is located in Oman and aims to provide rigorous coursework for language study and cultural learning.  Students are challenged to develop their reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills in Modern Standard Arabic and spoken dialects.  Noor Majan uses genuine material from print and broadcast to reinforce learning through the media.

This summer, the Noor Majan Arabic Institute is offering new online courses.  Classes can be either 10, 15, 20, or 30 hours and vary in price.  There are a wide-range of course offerings including: Introduction to Arabic, Omani Dialect, Grammar Revision, Arabic Poetry, Research, etc.

Qasid Arabic Institute 

The Qasid Arabic Institute is based out of Amman, Jordan and focuses its programs around holistic language mastery.  Qasid's core program is their two-track division into Classical and Modern Standard Arabic.  This program is structured around Qasid's philosophy that specialization is the fastest and most effective method for moving toward mastery.  Students are also able to take courses in the Levantine Dialect.

Individual and group classes will be offered online this summer.  Students can enroll in Modern Standard Arabic, Classical Arabic, or Levantine Dialect courses.  Advanced students can take Media Arabic, Business Arabic, Translation, or Classical Arabic Texts through one-on-one tutoring.  

Short, self-paced courses are also available for students with specific areas of interest and a restrictive time frame.  Audio and video series are accessible for students in a variety of topics including: pronunciation, writing, grammar, etc.  Supplementary materials are also included on Qasid's website to enhance individual Arabic studies.

Online Study Resources:

The following resources can be used by students to begin language learning or continue language studies.  

Al-Jazeera

Al-Jazeera offers free resources for students to study Arabic.  Students can take a placement test which helps guide them through the best lessons, videos, and articles to access based off of their level of comprehension.  A dictionary is also available on the website.  

Internet Polyglot

Internet Polyglot offers lessons to help students memorize words and meanings.  Their study tools focus on retention and are especially helpful for those with a foundation in the language.  This is a free resource for language learners.

Livemocha

Livemocha offers lessons in over 35 languages.  Structured lessons are provided for reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  Premium membership allows students to access virtual classes and private tutors.  While premium membership is paid for, students can earn lesson credits by tutoring in their native language or giving feedback on pronunciation.  

Live Lingua Project

The Live Lingua Project is a compilation of free language learning resources from the US Peace Corps and Defense Language Institute.  Students can choose from over 130 languages and access free resources including: textbooks, study guides, and audio files.  Lessons with native speakers are available at a cost.

Madinah Arabic 

Madinah Arabic offers free resources for learning Arabic.  Students can study Modern Standard Arabic, Business Arabic, Classical Quranic Arabic, and Tajweed.  At a cost, Madinah Arabic offers private lessons with native speakers to practice their skills.

Memrise

Memrise is an app for teaching yourself a language. It offers Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Persian, and Turkish. Watch and learn real conversational language from native speakers. Get a personalized learning experience that gives you just the right level of challenge to keep you motivated.
