The Middle East Studies Center and the Undergraduate International Studies Program (UISP) are offering an opportunity to support MESC's programming while developing academic and workplace skills. Students must be in the International Studies Program in order to obtain credit for their work. We do not accept applicants who are not intending to register through UISP credit. You can apply here.
Job Description
Academic Intern
The academic intern revises, updates, and writes original content for the Middle East Studies Center's website. He/she/they will also compose Twitter and other social media messages, including an appropriate and meaningful image to complement the content. The academic intern will learn the tools and processes for entering event data and for analyzing our event and social media data for the purpose of enhancing reports on our programs and activities. Projects that the intern undertakes will make a meaningful contribution to the advancement of the outreach and engagement program at the Middle East Studies Center.
The academic intern requires professional communication skills, and a willingness to learn basic office software tools and website content management software. He or she may communicate with guest speakers and other units on campus. Prior to the event he/she may do research on expenses, prepare documentation for payments, secures venues, create handouts, or other aspects of the event planning and execution, as needed.
The academic intern may be responsible for escorting guest speakers or attending to their questions and needs ahead, and after, their visit. They will be expected to greet people who attend our events. His or her success will be judged by their professionalism, the accuracy of their work, and their ability to work as part of a team.
Requirements:
- Effective communication verbally and in writing
- Interest in learning about the Middle East
- Willingness to learn
Desired skills and abilities:
- Data analysis
- Problem-solving and independent thinking
- International experience
- Experience with planning and hosting events
- Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft word and excel, or their equivalent (Google docs, etc)
Regular work hours 7.5 per week, plus occasional evening and weekend hours when have special events.
