The Middle East Studies Center is growing its internship program! We are now offering a paid opportunity to support our programming and lead the student team! We intend to grow the team to 3-5 members, including students earning academic credit and work-study students. All interns will gain writing and collaboration skills in addition to basic web content management skills.

Job Description

Lead Intern

The lead intern ensures events on the web calendar and internal MESC calendars are aligned, arranges logistics for each event, and a final report for each event.  The lead intern trains other team members in the tools for these processes (and MESC volunteers), and ensures any event data other interns enter are complete and accurate for financial transactions and reports.   

The lead programming intern will have the opportunity to apply what they learned as an academic intern with the Middle East Studies Center, and build related event coordination skills. Projects that the intern undertakes will make a meaningful contribution to the advancement of the outreach and engagement program at the Middle East Studies Center.  This is a critical position for ensuring a positive experience for guest speakers and participants at our events.

The lead intern requires excellent communication skills, basic office software tools, and a willingness to learn media and website content management software. He or she communicates with guest speakers, co-sponsors and event participants at our events about the program to ensure a positive experience.  Prior to the event he/she may write social media posts, do research on expenses, prepare documentation for payments, secures venues, creates handouts, or other aspects of the event planning and execution, as needed.

The lead intern may assign data entry and some logistical responsibilities to other students on the engagement team, and/or MESC volunteers. They will be responsible for at least one guest per semester and will organize their itinerary, seeing to key details of their their arrival, their stay on campus, and their departure.  His or her success will be judged by quality of their input, support and execution of events, the accuracy of their reports and updates, and their problem-solving abilities.

Requirements:

  • Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft word and excel, or their equivalent (Google docs, etc)

  • Effective communication verbally and in writing
  • Experience with planning and hosting events
  • Interest in learning about the Middle East

Desired skills and abilities:

  • Data analysis
  • Problem-solving and independent thinking
  • International experience

Regular work hours 7.5 per week, plus occasional evening and weekend hours. 

Timeframe: December 2022 - May 2023
