Brandy Phipps on Community-Centered Approaches for Food Systems Transformation

The Middle East Studies Center, Global Water Institute, and University Libraries will host a food sovereignty workshop on October 13 and 14, 2022.  Globally, 27% of people face moderate or severe food insecurity, representing more than 2 billion people. “Community-Centered Approaches for Food Systems Transformation” will represent local/global perspectives on how to address this crisis. We will highlight Yemen and other regions of the world in addition to food sovereignty practices of the Menominee Tribal College in Wisconsin. 

Join us! Dr. Brandy Phipps, Research Assistant Professor of Food, Nutrition, and Health at Central State University, will give the keynote address. Dr. Phipps currently leads a transdisciplinary team focused on food systems transformation, which includes significant work to support food sovereignty efforts of the Menominee Nation. Dr. Phipps (photo, right) testifies before the U.S. House of Representatives, Subcommittee on Biotechnology, Horticulture, and Research (Committee on Agriculture).

This is a two-day workshop, with day two focusing on collaboration and university/community partnerships. Day 1 will take place at Thompson Library on Ohio State's main campus. We are also working with a local food sovereignty group on a related project that might interest you. They are called the “Growing and Growth Collective” We would like to partner on a global film series focused on food sovereignty projects. We are planning to screen “Gather,” “Arc of Justice,” and other films documenting food sovereignty activities around the world.
