Internship with the Middle East Studies Center at OSU

The Middle East Studies Center in the Office of International Affairs is now accepting applications for an internship through May 2017. Applicants should have strong research and writing skills, and a demonstrated interest in global issues of race and social justice. There will be substantial academic content, and the intern will be responsible for key aspects of our public events and training programs.  We have a weekly team meeting, and regular performance reviews. OSU students enrolled in the undergraduate International Studies program are eligible to earn credit (contact: meltz.2@osu.edu).  

Mission

The mission of the Center is to foster and generate knowledge of the Middle East, its past and current economic, social and political developments, and to promote teaching, learning, research and public awareness of the diverse array of Middle Eastern languages, cultures, and peoples. As a part of that mission, MESC helps OSU to make knowledge accessible to the citizens of Ohio. Sharing university resources and expertise with academic communities, the general public at a variety of venues, federal and state agencies, and the media, helps the Center to make a greater impact. 

 

Principal Duties

Intern duties center on support for event planning, reporting and execution. This often includes communications and media production, and tech support at events. Projects assigned may include research and other support for the creation of instructional materials; compiling data and data analysis; culling current headlines and seeking interviews with OSU faculty for comment, and others. Interns will work on a wide variety of topics including, but not limited to: media representation of Islam and Muslims, the Middle East in World Affairs, and social justice issues such as racism and displacement.  Interns will be responsible to checklists for formatting, copyright and accessibility, event planning and publicity. Interns will help us build and maintain a collection of open source images for classroom teachers and other educators who would like to teach about the Middle East (see digital activities strategy).  

MESC interns are expected to further their knowledge and skills by attending lectures on topics related to the Center's mision, utilizing the Digital Unions to learn and use their software. MESC interns are expect to attend a weekly team meeting, to work independently while providing frequent progress updates to their manager or the project lead, and to take on miscellaneous office tasks, as needed. 

Examples of specific tasks: web content updates; image research; proofreading and minor editing; image/video editing; html; design programs (ibook author-available at every Digital Union); image management programs such as Picasa, or web based such as Flickr. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor (or graduate) degree completed (or in progress) or equivalent combination of education/experience; experience with Microsoft Office suite software, including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint; experience with statistical and data analysis and data entry; excellent verbal and written communication skills; good organizational skills and the ability to work independently, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines; a demonstrated interest in issues of race and ethnicity.
