Note on FLAS eligibility: Domestic foreign language study can be funded by the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships and is an excellent alternative for those who have not yet achieved advanced levels. Summer courses must have at least 140 hours of actual classroom instruction to be eligible for funding. The Middle East Studies Center currently supports FLAS Fellowships for Arabic, Hebrew, Persian and Turkish. For further information on eligibility and application procedures, please follow this link to see: FLAS Procedures
Summer Language Programs Abroad: Please see the Study Abroad page for information on overseas summer programs – many of these are also FLAS-eligible. In order to go abroad, however, a FLAS Fellow must be at the intermediate level or higher.

UW-Madison's Summer Arabic & Persian Immersion Programs is a joint project of the Department of African Languages and Literature and the Department of Languages and Cultures of Asia, coordinated by Global Studies with support from the College of Letters and Science.
This summer had five course offerings: Elementary, Intermediate & Advanced Arabic, Elementary Persian, and Intermediate Persian. Each course was equivalent to one year of language study in a normal university setting and offered eight semester credits.
The program is open to UW and non-UW students, as well as professionals. We are committed to helping students achieve their Arabic and Persian language goals through an atmosphere of intimate cooperation and collaboration among our students and faculty.
Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced Modern Standard Arabic. Students are required to live in UW dorms located in the LaCrosse campus, and must sign a language contract agreeing to communicate in only Arabic during the entire length of the eight-week course. Cultural events such as mini-courses, films, and music programs are offered, as well as activities like soccer, cooking, yoga, etc. conducted in Arabic. UW-Global Studies will offer FLAS fellowships to non-UW students (see website for details)
