Information Sources and Research on the Middle East:
A major part of the Center’s function is to provide a reliable source of information to the public and the media.  Many sources are now internet-based and it can be difficult or simply too time consuming to research the organizations or people behind the site, let alone the accuracy of the information on the site.  Nothing can replace a critical reading of potential sources for research and study, but MESC provides verification for a site’s authenticity, scholarship, and/or usefulness, as well as suggestions for resources in other formats.

The resources maintained in this web site have selected audiences in mind: scholars, students, teachers, media, and members of the general public.  Resources for research include reference works and primary sources from Middle Eastern countries on line. In addition, a bibliography of recommended fundamental texts is provided for those beginning to study the Middle East or those widen their knowledge. Many other items are available from the web calendar (materials or recordings related to events) or can be downloaded, and through the MESC lending library.  A number of selections are held in OSU’s library system.  Those with OSU usernames and passwords can access them directly from home. Students, faculty members, and staff members affiliated with OhioLINK institutions can request books online, view journal articles online, search authoritative databases, and make use of other OhioLINK services that enhance research and education. See: http://www.ohiolink.edu/help/catalog-faq.html for instructions on how to order materials through Ohiolink and pick them up at your library. Teachers can request access to the collection (see contact info below).

Those without OSU access, can come to campus to access materials at the OSU library. Teachers are often able to check books out if they show professional identification. Be aware that the main library at OSU is currently closed for renovations.  The Jewish Studies and Middle East Studies collections are currently located at 600 Ackerman Rd. However, books can be ordered at the Sullivant Hall Library: 110 Sullivant Hall 1813 N. High St. Hours: Mon-Thu: 8 a.m. - Midnight Fri and Sat: 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. Sun: 11 a.m. - Midnight Check Library Locations and Hours for Quarter breaks and holidays. Phone: (614) 292-2075 (Circulation and Reserves) (614) 292-2818 (Reference) Fax:(614) 292-8012 For further information on the Library Renovation: http://library.osu.edu/sites/renovation/index.php

The community that is invited to use the resources on this web site includes all individuals interested in learning, teaching or researching the Middle East.  Please provide us with feedback about your experience using the resources, and let us know what you are doing in relation to Middle East studies.  We would like to create a sense of community among individuals in Ohio and the surrounding regions, and facilitate collaboration.  Please see our publication, The Middle East Studies Bulletin, in our news section for information on what is going on here at Ohio State, Ohio, and the region.  If you have any questions, please contact mesc@osu.edu and one of the MESC staff will reply to you within 2 business days.
