THE EDUCATOR RESOURCE LIBRARY AT THE MIDDLE EAST STUDIES CENTER

MESC has a collection of videos, books, and maps featuring subjects related to the Middle East. Browse the full listing here. Please contact Mary Beth Benecke, at benecke.3@osu.edu to borrow materials.

MIDDLE EAST/JUDAICA LIBRARY

     The Ohio State University Middle East/Judaica Library is a major research and instructional resource. The collection contains approximately 150,000 books of which over half are in the vernacular languages (Arabic, Persian and Turkish.) The Library also maintains subscriptions to Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish periodicals and newspapers, including foreign language editions. Topics covered include the history and culture of the Middle East and North Africa from the 7th century A.D. to the present, the religion of Islam throughout the world, and Arabic, Persian and Turkish languages and literatures. The MES Reading Room is a non-circulating reference collection. This is just a small part of the total Middle East collection. The Reading Room contains the specialized encyclopedias, dictionaries and bibliographic tools, in Western and vernacular languages, necessary for the study of the Middle East, its languages and cultures and Islamic Studies.

The MES Reading Room also contains academic and popular journals from and about the Middle East as well as newspapers from the region. Only the most recent issues are in MES; consult OSCAR for the location of older issues. However, MES/Judaica Library is in temporary quarters on Ackerman Road during the renovation of the Main Library. The visiting address for the Middle East Collection will be:

TEACHER RESOURCES:

Courses for Educators
The Middle East Studies Center (MESC) offers several short and long-term courses for P-12 teachers and other educators. These include The Summer Institute on Middle Eastern Cultures (formerly the Summer Workshop on Middle Eastern Cultures), The Arab World Workshop, The Horn of Africa Workshop (in collaboration with The Center for African Studies), lectures in the "Global Hotspots" lecture series, and many others. Resources for Instruction and Classroom Support
Materials including commercially available lesson plans, maps, books, and videos helpful for integrating the Middle East into a curriculum are available in our educator resource library (browse the selection here).
