Title VI NRC/FLAS grant competition is underway
The Middle East Studies Center (MESC) is a US Department of Education Undergraduate Title VI National Resource Center (NRC). Since its designation as a National Resource Center in 1988, it has been consistently renewed in the 1991, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2003, and 2005 cycles, for a total of 19 years. Currently, we working hard to write our next grant proposal for Title VI NRC/FLAS funding (see MES Bulletin, SP08 for more on how our funds are spent). The next grant cycle will begin On Agust 15th 2010, and will end on August 14th 2014.
MESC current events lecture series and annual symposium
The MESC current events lecture series is open to the public and lectures are scheduled in the evening , or recorded and provided on line, for easier access. The lectures focus on the local context of current issues for a better understanding of events covered in the news. Speakers are either from the region, or have conducted extensive field work there, as the goal is to convey knowledge and information from insiders’ points of view. Previous lectures include: “The Global Political Economy of Oil and the ‘New Nationalism’”, Tom O’Donnell, 11/13/2007; Lecture for the Documentary “Shadow of Afghanistan”, Alam Payind, 11/15/2007; “Can Ayatollah Sistani’s Alternative to Khomeinism Survive?”, Juan Cole, 10/8/2008; “Drug Money: Opium, Crime, and Insurgency in Afghanistan”, Dawood Azami, 10/14/08; “A Critique of the Muslim Modernist approach to Interpreting the Qur’an”, Mehmet Pacaci, 2/20/2009; and many others.
